Buy Art, Do Art, For The Sake Of Your Sanity

This is a plea for a mindful lifestyle. The very poor survive from day to day. The poor survive from week to week. And so on. Some people will be able to survive from month to month and some others from year to year.

But there is also a very strange phenomenon that occurs in the middle class life style and in the life of the affluent. They tend to once again entertain a life style where one survives from day to day! When the hunger pains do not direct your very next hour anymore on strength of a reasonable credit card facility to back you up, it is quite possible that a new type of hunger could emerge. The hungry soul is an awful thing and it runs on empty.

Karl Jaspers, a philosopher, once said that one goes to university to become a wise man of culture. Or woman I presume. Very few of the masses that live, or lived, on this spinning planet, will ever be able to go to university. They will not have the quiet time to indulge into the books that stand waiting on the library shelves, they will not contemplate history, art, music etc. They will not do so, either because they are not equipped for that, or because they don't have the money to pay for that enriching experience. The tragedy is that most of the people fortunate enough to attend university will also miss out on the enriching experience that lies within a hand's reach. Most students will not become wise men or women of culture. They will only become efficient professionals, capable to perform a variety of services in society and make a good deal of money doing that.

While some people will then survive from day trying to soften the hungry screams of their stomachs, some others will sell some motor cars, others will be a doctor to the sick, a lot will be sitting in front of a computer doing something that they will be able to leave at the down tick of the business day. Then they will go home or go to have a few drinks with friends with the hope that something exciting might creep into the daily banter. Television will keep most occupied up to bed time, providing mediocre entertainment and playing to base sentiment, but at least being the pop-up artist that will prevent one from asking what this is all about.

We will not be able to drink the devil down. We can engage in whatever activities wherever, but the soulful lifestyle is the only way that provides a cure against overwhelming emptiness.

A soulful life style is an artful lifestyle. It entails a way to look at things and experience the essence of it, it contemplates good and evil, it smells the perfume of normal life and its underlying belly, it listens to the guitar solo of every human voice playing its heart out on street corners and at kitchen tables.

One should live art in all its normal nuances. It should become a lifestyle. In such a life style, life as such will start to come back and display itself.

One will become attentive to your children, spouse and friends. You will start to read a different type of book, switch the television off, engage in the creative thing buried somewhere in the locked heart, and become part of a caring community.

And art will set you free. There are cosmetic artists that will play with their brushes on the chocolate box side of the gullible, but the serious artists will be the strange prophets coming out of a thousand lone caves to put the blood of their longings and visions on canvas.

One should not buy art because it is primarily a good investment, or because very knowledgeable people tell you that an artwork is sublime or intellectual or whatever. One should stand in front of an artwork and when it resonates to something that set your soul free, it should be bought. Then taken home, put up at against a wall where human beings living and fighting gallantly against mediocrity could pause to enjoy and then to dive deeper into real life after that encounter.

Art and an artful life shall set the numbed soul free.
